What is a Capital Campaign and How Is It Different from/Similar to Other Fundraising?

While virtually all nonprofits need to raise money on an ongoing basis for operating expenses, the capital campaign is unique in several ways. It is different in purpose since the money is used to offset major capital expenses: building construction or renovation, major equipment purchases, building an endowment for the future and/or program expansion. It is also different for many smaller organizations, because it is a once in a lifetime experience that may be the largest amount of money this organization has attempted to raise.  Read more

If a capital campaign is in your organization's future, you will want to do everything you can to assure success. There are several key ingredients to every successful campaign and, when analyzing successful campaigns, three of these ingredients surface as the most crucial.

The following items will help assure success:

  • A strong annual fund history;
  • A realistic goal;
  • A sufficient pool of qualified prospects;
  • Strong staff support;
  • Gift acceptance policies;
  • Campaign organizational structure; and
  • Adequate donor software system.

And the three key ingredients:
  • A compelling case for support;
  • A committed board of directors;
  • Strong volunteer leadership.
