Happy New Year!
Linda Lysakowski, ACFRE

Can you believe it is 2009 already?
This past year has been one of ups and downs for many of us. Economic crisis, a history-making presidential election in the US, and a new 990 form that will greatly affect nonprofits are just some of the issues we faced in 2008. Now we are starting a new year, one that is filled with some trepidation and yet a degree of hope. A new year is always exciting, as we set goals for ourselves and our
organizations.
The 2008 year was a meaningful one for CAPITAL VENTURE as we celebrated out 15th anniversary. An impressive number of you attended the free workshops we offered throughout the country to celebrate our 15th year in business. We will continue offering workshops throughout 2009, focusing on topics to help you strengthen your organization's fundraising activities during this trying time. We hope we will see you at one of these workshops throughout the upcoming year.

We also launched our new website in December 2008. We've enjoyed fantastic reviews from those who have visited the website to view the free tutorials, tipsheets and tools we’re offering and to check for nonprofit workshops in their areas. If you haven't visited it yet, be sure to stop by www.cvfundraising.com soon and come back often because we're updating events and adding new tutorials all the time. The most recent tutorial is Building an Effective Board and the most recent Tip Sheet is Fundraising in a Poor Economy. While you're there, make sure you visit Consultant on Call. We added many, many new free tools over the holiday weekend for you to download. We're also still adding features with several others in the works for launch in the near future. We are particularly pleased to offer the option to download materials now from any CAPITAL VENTURE workshop you attend. It's a little thing, but it can really enhance your learning experience if you can revisit the PowerPoint presentation to clarify a point or to open it again a few months later to refresh your memory.

Looking forward into the new year, my new book is finally finished and will be published in 2009. The Essential Nonprofit Fundraising Handbook, co-authored by Michael Sand, Esq, is designed for grassroots organizations and those that are new to fundraising, but it is also an excellent overview of the fundraising process any nonprofit will find useful.

Also, in 2009, we will be exhibiting at the International AFP Conference in New Orleans. If you are attending the conference, be sure to visit us at Booth # 1037. This is the largest gathering of fundraisers in the world. If you haven’t attended an International Conference before, this is the year to do it. We look forward to seeing you there!
Motivating Your Board to Get Involved in Fundraising
Almost every organization we talk to faces one major hurdle to their fundraising efforts — getting their board involved in fundraising. Many board members fear fundraising, other just don’t see it as their responsibility, and others would like to get more involved but are not sure what they can do to help. Here are ten ways to get your board involved in fundraising.
  1. Bring your board together for an evening to do a Thank-A-Thon to current donors, thanking them for their gift, but not asking for money.
  2. Ask each board member to arrange a tour of your facility and lunch with your CEO for one friend or colleague at least three times a year.
  3. Have each board members sponsor a breakfast or lunch at your facility for a group of potential donors once a year.
  4. Ask board members to host a cocktail party or dinner party in their home at which someone from your organization can present your case for support.
  5. Invite a reluctant board member to accompany a staff or other board member on a major gift call.
  6. Provide training in planned giving for your board, and invite them each to make a planned gift to the organization.
  7. Suggest that board members ask their relatives and friends to make donations to your organization in lieu of birthday, anniversary or holiday gifts for them.
  8. Invite board members to attend an AFP meeting with you.
  9. Make sure board members “spread out” and mingle at each event your organization conducts.
  10. Conduct a Board Boot Camp to help your board develop their networks.
Technology Corner — FREE Website Analysis!
Before giving you the details of this fabulous CAPITAL VENTURE New Year's gift, let me personally thank each person who sent feedback to us about the website last month. Many of you apologized for being nitpicky or too demanding. Far from it! My sincerest thanks to everyone for taking time out of your busy holiday schedule to ask for specific features or tutorials, or to report broken links, misspelled words and problems with the layout. The website is already massive and continues to grow each day. There's no way we can possibly catch every problem unless you let us know. Not only do we thank you, but the thousands of other people you saved from being frustrated by the same issue thank you, too. Kudos! Please continue to send your feedback and to report problems. We need your input!

And now, our gift to you — a complimentary mini-analysis of your website to start the New Year right. The mini-analysis is a shortened, but strong, version of our standard one and covers a wide range of basic website components. It includes a review of the keywords, HTML code, browser compatibility, design, navigation, forms, loading speed, usability, accessibility and the clarity of your marketing message. If your website is not working for you or if you're thinking about a new one in 2009, the analysis can be a great starting point to begin your research.

If you'd like to be added to the list for this one-time offer, please send me an email at kathryn@cvfundraising.com with your website URL and please feel free to include questions about your website or instructions to check out a specific problem with it. I'll give it a thorough check-up and send a complete report back within a few days. Offer deadline: January 15, 2009.

Best wishes for a happy, peaceful and prosperous 2009!

Kathryn
