  Building Donor Relationships That Last
Linda Lysakowski, ACFRE

It’s been said that the three key words in fundraising are Relationships, Relationships, Relationships!

Who do we need to build relationship with and how do we build them?

Donors of course, should be our primary focus when building relationships, but there are other stakeholders we should consider as well:

  • Other staff within our organizations—the CEO, the Finance Department, the Relations Department, Program Staff etc.;
  • The media;
  • The community;
  • Clients, students, whoever we consider users of our services;
  • Other professional fundraisers.

Building good relationships with all of these people is important to our professional growth. It will help us become better fundraisers and can make our lives easier.

But, what about those all important donors? Here are a few tips to help you build life-long donors:

  • Contact donors when you are not asking for money-a friendly call, a "Thank-a-Thon" which does not involve an ask, a birthday card or other special occasion card, a visit, or a note offering congratulation on a newsworthy event in the donor's life. All of these will help the donor feel special and appreciated.
  • Involve donors in the mission of the organization-invite them to serve on a committee or task force, ask their opinions about new programs, solicit their advice when planning new fundraising approaches.
  • Respect the donor's wishes. Be sensitive about their time commitments. One organization increased their corporate appeal dramatically just by changing the time and format of the meetings with corporate volunteers.

All of these ideas can help you build stronger relationships with your donors, increase your donations, and make your job more rewarding.

  Free Resource:
  “I’m from the government and I am here to help you.” Although this phrase has usually been used tongue-in-cheek, there are numerous free resources available from the government that can help nonprofits. One of these is the Internal Revenue Service (IRS)’s website that offers online training in five key issues related to nonprofit operations, including unrelated business income and the Form 990. The website, “Stay Exempt” Tax Basics for 501 ( c ) ( 3 )s, offers online training in the following areas:
  • Tax-exempt status (how to remain exempt)
  • Unrelated business income (UBIT)
  • Employment issues
  • Form 990
  • Required disclosures

Each training session takes about half an hour (except for the Form 990 presentation, which lasts one hour), and features both visual and audio sections (the audio can be turned off). Participants can choose sections that may be of interest rather than going through the entire training.

Fundraisers may find the online training on unrelated business income, the Form 990 and required disclosures to be of particular interest. The website address is http://www.stayexempt.org/.

Speaking of training, CAPITAL VENTURE has developed a Training Catalogue, which is available by email. We provide a wide variety of workshops for groups such as AFP chapters, statewide associations, national organizations, dioceses, United Ways and nonprofit resource centers.
