New
Year's Resolutions for Your Development Office
Linda Lysakowski,
ACFRE |

Almost all of us start out
each year with some type of New Year’s resolutions. Whether
it is to lose weight, stop smoking, be kinder to others, or to spend
more time with our families, these resolutions usually involve some
type of self improvement.
For most of us, by the end of January, they have been lost in the
shuffle of too many demands on our time, too much pressure at work
and too little self control. Even if we’ve written them down
and refer to them daily, it sometimes hard to keep on track. Those
of us in the nonprofit world can benefit by setting some goals for
the New Year to |

Some suggested resolutions for your development office might include:
- Build a solid development plan (watch for my
new book, The Development Plan, which will be published
by Wiley & Sons in March);
- Involve the whole department in following the
plan;
- Build a better relationship with the Executive
Director, Chief Financial Officer, Public Relations Department,
etc.;
- See or talk to one major donor every week;
- Take a course in some aspect of development
about which you need to learn more;
- Work less hours, but working smarter (using
better technology might help);
- Take a vacation;
- Read a good book about some aspect of development
each month;
- Read a good book that has nothing to do with
development each month;
- Take a program person out to lunch each month
to find out more about their work;
- Initiate a board education program at board
meetings;
- Put the mission statement of your organization
at the top of all memos, on meeting agendas, on your screen saver,
in a frame on the wall of your office etc.
Even if you just pick one of these resolutions, or develop one
or more of your own; if you stick to them faithfully, at the end
of next year you will be happier with your job performance, more
successful in your development efforts and a wiser person. Do let
me know how it is going throughout the year. We would love to add
YOU to our client success stories.
