Scary
Fundraising Happenings Linda

When I was younger,
Halloween was always one of my favorite holidays. I loved getting
dressed up in costume and scaring people. I must confess, I still
love Halloween and am always disappointed when we get no “trick
or treaters” at our home. Amazing how even young ones are
sometimes afraid to ask! As we approach October, I welcome the
feel of a crisp fall evening and the crunch of falling leaves, for
those of you living where you have leaves! (They are pretty scarce
here in Nevada.) I am also reminded of some scary fundraising stories
I’ve heard and thought this might be a |

good time to share some
of the pitfalls of the fundraising world.
A recent AFP e-Wire talked about some bizarre gifts in kind received
by charities—including hundreds of pairs of queen size purple
pantyhose received by a food bank, and a couple hundred left foot
only cowboy boots which the ingenious recipient put to use as centerpieces
for a western themed gala.
Then there was the organization that hired an inexperienced consultant
to manage their capital campaign. The consultant developed and had
printed thousands of fundraising pieces which did not contain the
state registration disclaimer that was required in their state, so
they had to throw them all away and print new ones.
And then there are dozens, if not hundreds, of tales about organizations
who engage telephone solicitors to do a calling program for them on
a percentage basis and the charities receive anywhere from 0 to 10
or 15% of the funds raised, while the rest goes to the solicitor.
And, how about the small nonprofit with one staff person devoted to
development and PR, that runs 14 special events every year! Or, the
organization in the northeast part of the United States whose special
event, which they relied upon for 75% of their budget, was planned
to be held on a day when the worst blizzard of the year occurred,
resulting in major layoffs in the organization when they couldn’t
meet payroll.
Or, the organization that, in the process of running a major capital
campaign, decided not to do their annual appeal that year, and had
to close their doors several days a week, because they couldn’t
pay their operating expenses. |

Some
Hints for Avoiding Scary Happenings in Your Development Office:
|
|
- Always have gift acceptance policy that clearly outlines what
kind of gifts you will accept.
- Be sure to clearly understand any consulting contract into which
the organization enters.
- Get references for any consultants with whom you are working
to make sure they have experience with the kind of work you are
engaging them to do.
- Be sure you have an integrated development program that includes
a variety of funding approaches so not all your “eggs are
in one basket.”
- Always plan how you will handle the annual appeal during a capital
campaign.
