Getting
Your Board Involved in Fundraising Linda
Lysakowski, ACFRE |
|
|
Last
month we looked at the philanthropic culture of nonprofits that enables
board members to take on their rightful role in the development process.
A number of people told us that their board members wanted to get
more involved in their fundraising efforts, but were not sure how
to use the skills and talents they possess, and the staff members
were uncertain about how to help board members access their networks.

|
|
How
Do Get Board Members Involved?
|
|
|
|
- Make sure board members understand the importance of development
to the organization—perhaps an educational session at each
board meeting about some aspect of development can help.
- Ask the Development Committee to invite the board's participation;
it is much easier to get board members to respond to a peer person
or group than to a staff member.
- Invite an outside "expert" to talk to the board about their
role in development. This could be a consultant or a board member
of a local nonprofit that has excelled in getting its board involved
in fundraising.
- Hold a brainstorming session at every other board meeting in
which board members review a select list of current or prospective
donors to help determine contacts they might have with these donors.
- Hold a special board retreat focusing on development.
- Be sure to invite board members to be creative in ways they
could help with development, being careful that they don't place
too much emphasis in special events.
- Provide board members with the support they need to be effective
fundraisers—good infrastructure, a compelling case for support,
effective materials.
- Provide training in various areas of development, such as planned
giving.
- Train board members in making "the ask."
- Plan team approaches to major gifts, a staff and board member
make the greatest team!

Plan
a Board Boot Camp!
Using an outside consultant takes the pressure off the development
officer to do the “training.” The development staff
is able to work side by side with the board to develop goals, brainstorm
ideas. and plan fundraising strategies. The board and staff become
a powerful development team. Click

Board Boot Camp a special four hour board program that focuses exclusively
on getting the board involved in fundraising.

Technology
Corner — MySpace.com?
|
|
Are
you missing an opportunity to reach 100 million people every month?
If you've ever thought about MySpace.com
and disregarded it as an advertising medium because you believed
its audience is too young to drive or sign a check, think again.
MySpace is
the largest and fastest growing online social network. A recent
report by ComScore
found that more than half its 100 million registered members were
over 35 years old. In June 2008, Alexa.com
ranked MySpace as the 3rd most visited web site in the United States,
only outranked by Google and Yahoo. It was also ranked the 6th most
visited web site in the world. Those are very impressive stats,
especially for nonprofit organizations whose lifeblood depends on
social networking and cultivating relationships. It may be a perfect
21st century match for your organization.
MySpace
offers all the tools you need to advertise the mission of your organization
and to send bulletins to your 'friends.' Take a few minutes and
investigate ways you can become part of a community whose population
is one-third that of the United States and whose members spend more
time in this one place than in any other. Let them know who you
are and what you do. It's an opportunity that may surprise you and
one you won't want to miss.

An
Exciting Opportunity for Organizations That Cannot Afford Traditional
Consulting Services
|
|
Last
year, we introduced a new, innovative service, Consultant on Call,
designed for organizations that need occasional consulting help, but
have limited budgets for consulting services. In our Consultant in
Call program, these organizations can have a consultant as close as
their computer and/or telephone at a reasonable fee. We have recently
expanded the scope of services in our Consultant on Call program and
are pleased to offer this service for a full year, six months, or
three months. Click
here to learn more about this service and a special 15th Anniversary
