Preparing for the New Year Tips

Year end planning is a critical part of any development office. Here are some steps to prepare your development program for the coming year.  

1. Make sure that you have a strong case for support.
2. Make sure your website is up to date and interactive.
3. Do an honest evaluation of your leadership—staff, board and volunteers.
4. Look into at least one new fundraising method—giving circles, Internet fundraising, and social networking are good places to start.
5. Have a diversified development plan.
6. Make certain your organization is transparent—attend a class in the new 990 Form. (The IRS is offering classes in some cities).
7. Invest in a good donor software package that will allow you to monitor all your development programs.
8. Conduct a planning study if you are contemplating a capital campaign.
9. Recruit a top-notch Development Committee.
10. Conduct a Board Boot Camp to help your board develop their networks.
